OK—I’ve been splurging at Ulta, Sephora and drug stores for all kinds of makeup and beauty products this month. There’s no one to blame but myself, but I will say that watching beauty gurus on Youtube does NOT help!!!

All I can do now is hope that my late makeup obsession can benefit others even while it is eating a hole in my pocket book. Wah!

FOUNDATIONS & CONCEALERS

Revlon PhotoReady Foundation - Great

I’ve always been a fan of the ColorStay line so I decided to try the new PhotoReady foundation. I like PhotoReady because it goes on smooth, it provides full coverage without feeling extremely heavy and looking cakey, it’s oil free, AND it contains sunscreen (which some ColorStay foundations do not). The only drawback is the line doesn’t have as much color selection as the ColorStay line.

L’Oreal True Match Foundation – Nice

I bought this because Brittney Grey said she liked it and I am obsessed with BG so I had to get it, LOL. J/K—sort of. Anyway, I really wanted it so that I could have a variety of foundations to choose from depending on the situation. This foundation provides a lighter coverage than the Revlon foundations, which is why I picked it up. It’s nice. It has a silky consistency, it’s oil free and contains sunscreen. A bonus is that the True Match line has a million and one shades to choose from ranging from warm, neutral and cool tones. Drawback—there are so many damn shades that I get confused! I can’t tell if I’m warm or cool and their little hints that they give don’t help. No, I don’t think I look good in dark green, but I feel like I have a yellow-ish undertone…I think? See what I mean? Anyway, if you can get your color right, then I think it’s good. It’s nice and light, blendable and buildable.

Revlon PhotoReady Concealer - Lovely

This concealer, which is lipstick consistency, is a tad thicker than I would prefer, but it does the trick. If you have blueish/purplish dark circles under your eyes, this WILL eliminate them. I wouldn’t say it does a whole lot of brightening (think Kim Khardashian makeup), but that’s a style choice. I don’t always want my undereyes all sparkly and such, ya know.

Revlon ColorStay Undereye Concealer - Good

OK, so sometimes I DO want my undereyes to be sparkly and when I want that I definitely reach for the ColorStay Undereye Concealer. For one it’s a lighter consistency than the PhotoReady Concealer and it’s brighter. The two drawbacks are that the applicator apparatus is annoying—I hate the twist up/clicking contraptions that alwaysproduce more product than needed. The second drawback is sometimes it feels sticky, but I think you’re supposed to use the applicator tip to avoid that, but again, I hate the applicator.

EYE MAKEUP

L’Oreal Extra Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner in Carbon Black - Freakn’ amazing

This pencil literally looks like liquid eyeliner, but it’s SO much easier to put on. In fact, I’m going to say it looks better than liquid eyeliner.

Maybelline Define-A-Brow Pencil in Dark Brown - Dislike

This was another “because Brittney (Grey) has it, I have to get it” purchase. I am a brown-skinned girl and dark brown/black eyebrows don’t even look good on me so who the heck would they look good on? Why do they make this color basically is what I’m asking—lol. Maybe I would’ve liked it better had I gotten it in just “Brown,” but even still, I don’t like the waxy texture of the pencil. I ended up purchasing clear brow gel and using my angled makeup brush and a matte brown eye shadow to fill in my brows…so. much. better.

Maybelline Clear Great Lash Mascara – Perfect

There’s not much to say here folks. We all know that Great Lash is a fantastic mascara. Use it on your brows—it’ll hold em in place.

SmashBox Eyeshadow Primer – Good

This stuff is expensive ($20 for a teeny tube)! But, it does what it says it’s supposed to. It makes your eye shadow look brighter and more intense (without having to cake it on), and it prevents creasing. I likey. :D

Almay Powder Blush in Mauve – Beautiful!

This blush is silky and gives a really nice natural flush. It’s somewhere between matte and sparkly. It gives you a glow without exaggerating your imperfections. Basically, if you have big pores, you don’t have to avoid this like the dickens.

L’Oreal Wear Infinite Studio Secrets Professional Eyeshadow in Gilded Bronze – Wonderful

Not only is this color beaaaautiful on brown skin, but it’s also silky and really easy to apply. I love to wear it alone or on top of a deeper brown eyeshadow.

LOTIONS & CLEANSERS

Garnier Dark Spot Corrector – Great (so far)!!

Since I purchased this only a week ago, I can’t review how well it gets rid of spots such as acne scars and sun spots, but I can say that this lotion has the most wonderful consistency. It’s light and absorbs really well. It makes my skin feel soooo smooth. I literally look forward to putting it on every day. The ingredient that’s supposed to fight the dark spots is a potent amount of Vitamin C. Again, can’t tell if it’s working on my spots yet, but I can say it livens and brightens up my face each and every time I use it. Yay!

Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Liquid Daily Sunblock, SPF 55 – Fantastical!

This sun block, which is of liquid, not cream consistency, is made to go on under makeup. It’s sheer and matte so it won’t affect your final look. Attention brown girls – this does NOT leave that yucky whitish/purplish tint to our skin. By the way brown girls need to wear sun block, too. While we may have a natural SPF that is greater than our lighter sisters (and by lighter I mean White), we still can suffer from premature aging, sun burns, skin cancer and just general sun irritation!

The only drawback to this sunscreen that I can think of is it absorbs super quickly so it’s not the easiest to smooth on to the face. I get around that by dabbing a teeny bit all over my face and then rubbing it in.

Clean and Clear Morning Burst Facial Scrub – LOVIN IT

I originally bought the travel size and discovered I love this stuff. Again, the vitamin C just brightens up my face. It’s super duper gentle, but still gets the job done. My skin feels like new skin every night and every morning.

St. Ives Apricot Scrub – OK, borderline bad

This scrub is definitely a heavy duty scrub. I would only use this if your face has layers and layers of dead skin cells to get rid of. I used it a few times, and it just made my skin feel raw. I probably won’t be using this again.

Mango Salsa (Salmon)
If you LOVE sweet & salty foods,...

Mango Salsa (Salmon)

If you LOVE sweet & salty foods, you’re going to love mango salsa. It’s exactly what it sounds like—salsa made with mangos! You can eat it with chips like you would a traditional salsa or you can top off a nicely cooked piece of fish like salmon. (I think fattier fish are the way to go with this salsa).

It’s really easy to make—

When I make dinner for 2, I use the following measurements:

1 mango, diced/cubed

1 large tomato

1/2 onion or 1/3 — whatever your preference is

1/4 serrano chile pepper, finely chopped (these are hot hot HOT!)

cilantro — finely chopped

lime juice — I use half of a lime and I squeeze the heck out of it

salt and pepper — to taste

1 tsp or less of extra virgin olive oil

optional: minced garlic (1 clove) or a dash of garlic powder — this combined with the fresh onion could make your mouth not feel so nice so sometimes I skip it

ENJOY!

Lovin’ Miss Philippines, too!

Lovin’ Miss Philippines, too!

SO BEAUTIFUL!!! yaaaaay!!! :)

One night President Obama and his wife Michelle decided to do something out of routine and go for a casual dinner at a restaurant that wasn’t too luxurious. When they were seated, the owner of the restaurant asked the president’s secret service if he could please speak to the First Lady in private. They obliged and Michelle had a conversation with the owner. Following this conversation President Obama asked Michelle, “Why was he so interested in talking to you.” She mentioned that in her teenage years, he had been madly in love with her. President Obama then said, “So if you had married him, you would now be the owner of this lovely restaurant,” to which Michelle responded, “No. If I had married him, he would now be the President.”

Is this real?? If so, let us all adopt her mentality. Go Michelle!

Looks freakn delicious.
I’m pretty blown away by all of Promise Phan’s makeup tutorials on Youtube. She transforms herself into creatures, cartoon characters, and real life people flawlessly. However, I started to feel a little uncomfortable when she began to transform into Black people. It’s strange because I had no qualms about the petite Asian woman turning into a White woman, or a Latina, but it just irked the heck out of me when she turned into Nicki Minaj, Antoine Dodson and Lil Wayne!!!

Don’t get me wrong—aside from her Antoine Dodson transformation, she was pretty respectful. She wasn’t saying things like, “And now I’m going to make my nose really huge! and I’m going to kink up my hair to look nappy!!” No ridiculousness like that (thank God, lol). And, the end products were pretty attractive and true to life so she’s far from doing “Black Face” makeup, which is extremely exaggerated, messy and downright offensive. So she’s not all bad….

But have we advanced enough to do even cleaned up versions of Black Face? I’m guessing by my gut reaction to the transformations that we’re not. Just food for thought.

Fall fashion is approaching! I moved into my new...

DIY Wicker Baskets by AndreasChoice

I moved into my new apartment this last weekend and I went on a decorating rampage! The only area that I couldn’t seem to get right was my teal/mint themed bathroom. I brought the conundrum to one of my super stylish co-workers and she suggested that I buy some wicker baskets to add “warmth” to the space since I had told her that the bathroom seemed cold. At first I was skeptical that a simple wicker basket could be the thing my bathroom was missing, but you guys, she was right. The teal brought the fresh and clean feeling I was going for and the tan wicker basket brought the coziness.

My only update to my co-worker’s suggestion was to hang the basket on the wall, instead of using it as a traditional basket. I followed AndreasChoice tutorial on youtube to figure out how to do it. It’s super duper easy and relatively inexpensive. The basket was 10 bucks at Target, but I’m sure you can find them cheaper somewhere else (Marshalls or Ross anyone??)

The great thing about wicker baskets is they can go anywhere and you can use them for anything. I used them to hold some face cloths and hand towels, but Andrea shows that you can use them to hold purses or even DVDs. :) Enjoy!

Beau-ti-ful!

Beau-ti-ful!

ricciolina:

This is so not healthy, but what the hay—it’s freakn delicious. It’s simply a beef hot dog wrapped in thinly sliced bacon. I grabbed one of these from a street vendor (questionable, I know) one night after partying in the Mission District of San Francisco so of course, I had to recreate it at home.

The street vendor that I got the hot dog from used a grill to cook the bacon covered dogs, but I do not have a grill peoples so what do I do in these situations?? I broil AKA roast! First, I get my Hebrew National Beef Frank (this is my favorite brand and I do not stray from it), and role my hickory smoked, thinly sliced bacon around my dog. I secure the bacon with toothpicks at either end, then I place the dog on a foil lined cookie sheet and broil on low. Halfway through broiling, I rotate the dog to get the other side. I do this until the bacon is crisp all around and the dog is bursting open a bit at each end.

Toppings that go great with this are ketchup, horseradish mustard, sauerkraut, onions and jalapenos—my personal favs. A soft bun is also a must.

Sooooooo good. -__-

Shea Moisture Products - Review - Target (9.99)
Deep Treatment...

Shea Moisture Products - Review - Target (9.99)

Deep Treatment Masque: Um……no. This was not moisturizing for me whatsoever. It’s super thick and seems to contain great ingredients, but it’s just not hydrating. I’m sure it’s a successful styling cream, but it’s way too heavy for my liking. I typically don’t like products with butter consistencies on my hair. I’m just a little confused as to how others were able to rave about this. I did notice that most girls that were in love w/ this, used it as a styling cream. Those who used it as a wash-out conditioner like me didn’t give such glowing reviews. Ultimately, I say “boo” to Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque. BOOOO.

Curl Enhancing Smoothie: Love. this. stuff. First, let me say that I think this product should be renamed. I don’t think it makes natural curls pop. What it does is seriously hydrate your hair in a non-greasy way. I applied a teeny tiny bit (half a dime size) to each section of my braid out; I always do 3 braids on each side of my head. Then, on top of the smoothie, I applied the same amount of aloe vera gel for hold (without the gel, you won’t get as much definition). My hair was reaaaaaally soft the next day and the next day. :) I give this product a yay!! YAY!!

Moisture Retention Shampoo: I like this shampoo. Usually, my hair feels dried out and stripped after using a sulfate-free shampoo (go figure), but with this shampoo, I didn’t have that experience. My hair felt soft, yet clean. My only reservation is that the shampoo doesn’t smell that great; it doesn’t stink, but it’s not a pleasurable smell either. But yes, I like this shampoo enough to say that it has made it into my rotation. I give this shampoo a yeah! YEAH!
