Black Face - Is it OK now?
I’m pretty blown away by all of Promise Phan’s makeup tutorials on Youtube. She transforms herself into creatures, cartoon characters, and real life people flawlessly. However, I started to feel a little uncomfortable when she began to transform into Black people. It’s strange because I had no qualms about the petite Asian woman turning into a White woman, or a Latina, but it just irked the heck out of me when she turned into Nicki Minaj, Antoine Dodson and Lil Wayne!!!
Don’t get me wrong—aside from her Antoine Dodson transformation, she was pretty respectful. She wasn’t saying things like, “And now I’m going to make my nose really huge! and I’m going to kink up my hair to look nappy!!” No ridiculousness like that (thank God, lol). And, the end products were pretty attractive and true to life so she’s far from doing “Black Face” makeup, which is extremely exaggerated, messy and downright offensive. So she’s not all bad….
But have we advanced enough to do even cleaned up versions of Black Face? I’m guessing by my gut reaction to the transformations that we’re not. Just food for thought.
